Our volunteers
Your actions matter to us!
Our amazing volunteers are the backbone of You Matter and make practical, thoughtful and compassionate differences in the lives of women and children recovering from family violence.
Our volunteers share their time and skills to help women and children in our community. They are crucial to the successful functioning of our organisation – key to our success is collaboration, team work, mutual respect and hope. Without our volunteers we simply would not be able to deliver our Havens!
Volunteers are involved in a variety of activities that keep You Matter working as an efficient and effective organisation. From collecting, sorting & logging donated goods, maintaining our warehouse, setting up Havens, leading groups of volunteers, assisting to coordinate events, administrative support, assisting with grant applications, to helping maintain our website and social media presence.
We are always looking for new people to volunteer and would love to have you join us!

Jen McMahon
Service Coordinator
Jen has worked in Community Services for 40+ years, beginning her career in Childrens’ Services, including working at Berry Street. After completing a Associate Diploma in Welfare studies, and then a Graduate Diploma in Womens’ Studies, she worked at a number of community services organisations including Foster Care, Womens’ Homelessness, Interchange (for people with a disability), Pines Learning, a large Community Neighbourhood Centre as the Community Development Manager, Doncare (Doncaster Community Care and Counselling Centre), Odyssey House (drug and alcohol rehabilitation) with families and children.
At You Matter, Jen receives referrals from family violence organisations, assisting their clients by organising full set-ups of their new homes. Her role is the central point of connection between the family violence organisation, clients, our warehouse manager and the volunteers who set up the Havens.
Kelsey Smith
Volunteer Coordinator
Previously a Customer Service Manager in the ??? industries, Kelsie has volunteered her skills and time over many years to many other charitable organisations.
Kelsie has been with You Matter since its formation. As Volunteer Coordinator she is responsible for recruiting and inducting new volunteers, holding training sessions most months. At all times she helps organise our volunteers for specific regular roles — including Haven establishment, goods collection and working bees. In May 2023 she implemented a new volunteer communication system that enables our volunteers to quickly identify opportunities.
